Hi everybody!
Today I post a new article on my blog: I want to share with you the nutritional facts of my organic peanut butter.
It is a natural product, 100 % from vegetal origin, made with groundnuts and sesame seeds only. No additives.
It is a source of fat, which is the main ingredient. Although, it is mainly unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated ones (23 g/100 g) and polyunsaturated ones (17 g/100 g), which are “good fats” involved in the anti-inflammatory process, thanks to their ability of repairing cells damage. The content of saturated fats, the “bad ones”, is very low and cholesterol is absent.
Compared to other fatty foods (butter, oil, margarine…), peanut butter has a high content of protein (24 g/100 g), which are 100% from vegetal source.
It is a source of fiber (8,3 g/100 g), which is important in gut regulation and it moderates glucose and cholesterol absorption.
It is a good source of vitamins, in particular: vitamin E (7,6 mg/100 g), which is a powerful antioxidant and is involved in the immune system; folate (120 mcg/100 g), which is needed to make DNA and RNA, prevent anemia, create new cells especially during period of rapid cell division (growth of infant and child, pregnancy, lactation).
It is a good source of minerals, in particular: magnesium (204 mg/100 g), which is important for many organs such as heart, muscles and kidneys, it contributes to the composition of bones and teeth and to energy production and DNA synthesis; potassium (658 mg/100 g), which is important in neurologic and in the muscular systems and promotes cellular growth.
Due to its high content of energy (570 kcal/100 g), it can be used to enrich meals: even 1 or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter can give up to 90 kcal.
It can be used in multiple ways and different recipes: as a snack on a slice of bread or banana, as flavour in sauces, as a margarine substitute (margarine has high content of triglycerides and saturated fats, which are “bad fats”).
It can be used by many categories of people:
- Children, for its contents of unsaturated fats, folate and minerals
- Women in pregnancy and lactation, thanks to its content of energy and folate
- Sportsmen, as a snack right after their workout, thanks to its content of amino acids like isoleucine, leucine, valine (BCAAs)
- Elderly population, thanks to its strong taste (elders easily lose sense of appetite and of tasting)
It represents Ugandan culture and traditions: it is made with local ingredients and following a local method, memory of a population’s uses since long ago.
It can be included in a sustainable and nutritious diet.
